Jubilee Pool – swim, gym, community

Jubilee Pool & Gym is a 22 metre pool and 15-station gym in Knowle, South Bristol. It opened in 1937 and since then has been a hugely important part of people’s lives.

There are lots of ways to get active at Jubilee, including general swimming, family swims, swimming lessons for children and adults, aquafit, and accessible sessions for people with a range of disabilities. The pool is also used by local primary schools and community groups.

Jubilee Pool’s smaller size is also important to people who struggle to access larger pools, including people with learning or sensory disabilities, people with chronic illness or pain, older people, and survivors of violence and abuse.

Jubilee is part of local history and contributes to South Bristol’s sense of community, serving as a hub where people can come together.

Friends of Jubilee Pool – running the pool on behalf of the community

Jubilee was threatened with closure due to Council budget cuts between 2011 and 2022. Friends of Jubilee Pool is a group of passionate local volunteers who took on the immense challenge of taking the pool into community ownership. The hard work paid off and in October 2022 FoJP took over the running of the pool and became a registered charity.

FoJP’s vision is to provide a quality, sustainable local resource that is welcoming, affordable, inclusive and accessible for everyone in the community – encouraging people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and needs to start and continue to swim and exercise at every stage of their life. By being community-led and not-for-profit, FoJP will ensure Jubilee always best serves the future health and wellbeing requirements of its diverse range of users. FoJP will guarantee a future where the facility – with its rich history and fond memories – is able to not just survive, but thrive.

You can find out more about Friends of Jubilee Pool here. FoJP runs regular fundraising and community events, as well as work parties to help maintain the pool, so is always looking for new volunteers and people who can share their skills.

FoJP works in partnership with Parkwood Leisure Limited/Lex Leisure (CIC) to manage day-to-day operation of the pool on a not-for-profit basis, including all bookings and memberships.
